A second-generation owner hands off the weight of the business but keeps a stake in its future

The situation

The owner had worked in the business since he was 15 and bought it from his parents 15 years before the sale. He grew it substantially, but in his early 40s, with a new baby on the way, he was tired and ready to do something different.

The buyer

We found a buyer in his early 40s with an investment banking background who was ready to own and run a company of his own. The two hit it off, and the buyer asked the owner to keep some equity in the business.

The outcome

The structure suited the seller well: he no longer carried all of the responsibility, kept a share of the upside, and stayed involved only in the parts of the business he enjoys.
